Get off your butt Manly ©
Is sitting more toxic than a cigarette?
It might be time to get off your butt (and get adjusted)…
Why? Because sitting will kill you.
Well, it will shorten your life and/or reduce your enjoyment of it.
The October 2012 issue of the British Journal of Sports Medicine included research of nearly 12,000 Australian adults, showing that EVERY HOUR watching TV after the age of 25 reduces life expectancy by almost 22 minutes*.
This is why I don’t have a TV in my house.
ONE HOUR SITTING IS WORSE THAN SMOKING A CIGARETTE !
We all know the challenges that sitting places on our posture, as shown in the photo above. But there is increasingly more research showing the importance of healthy spine movement for your overall level of wellness.
You don’t need research to know that you feel healthier after a gentle adjustment – whether you’re an active person or not.
Another study published in “Diabetologia” including nearly 800,000 people, found that those who sat for the longest periods of time were twice as likely to have diabetes or heart disease. This doesn’t only apply to your stereotypical couch potatoes…
“Even for people who are otherwise active, sitting for long stretches seems to be an independent risk factor for conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and kidney disease…
Sitting and sedentary living is toxic.
Calling sitting a ‘toxic posture’ is not being overly dramatic just for the sake of it. Toxic postures and poor spine health are worse than cigarettes. Sure, a sedentary lifestyle is unhealthy, but how does sitting have such a massive effect on your overall health?
Sitting stresses your back in an unnatural manner. We didn’t evolve to sit in front of a computer or behind the steering wheel of a car. The body hasn’t developed a healthy coping mechanism for dealing with prolonged poor posture and sedentary living. This leads to poor spine movement, which leads to reduced mobility often causing premature degeneration and certainly causing reduced clarity for your nerve system.
Nerve system interference creates a reduction in your body’s ability to control its own physiology and maintain a necessary level of health. A healthy life requires nerve system clarity. The end result of nerve interference is less enjoyment of your life.
The research is building – a clear nerve system and healthy spine from regular exercise and spine maintenance is one of the most important factors for a healthy life.
If you can’t feel your nerve system screaming at you to get up and move around more often, it means you are suffering from an unealthy level of accumulated stress. Daily stress builds up, creating interference. This background noise makes it hard to feel the messages our nerve system is sending us. Messages to move and relieve strain on our structure. When we don’t respond to the messages, our nerve system increases the volume of the messages. A shouting nerve system equals ‘pain’, it’s that simple.
Light Touch reduces the background noise of accumulated stress in a unique, gentle manner that is safe and effective. A course of Light Touch care will help your nerve sysem restore clarity, reducing pain and improving function. What you can do right now is make sure you ge out of your chair every 30 minutes for a ‘posture break’ and a stretch. Now, get off your butt and enjoy healthy spine movement.
